A skin is configuration, not code. The color values themselves cost nothing at runtime. But people do report Codex feeling slower after they install a bunch of themes, and they’re not imagining it. The lag usually comes from three places — none of them are the colors.

What a skin does and doesn’t cost
When Codex starts, it loads your config, your engine, and the active theme. A single skin file is a handful of strings — reading it is microseconds. So a single installed skin cannot meaningfully slow anything down.
What can add real time: a skin engine scanning a huge library of installed themes, validating each one, or running network checks. The theme count matters more than the theme itself.
The three tweaks
1. Trim your installed theme library
Every installed theme is something your engine may scan, index, or list in a picker. If you’ve been collecting skins for months, you may have dozens you never use. Keep 3–5: one dark, one light, one terminal. Archive the rest as files on disk (they’re just text) instead of leaving them installed. 2. Watch out for engines that “phone home”
Some theme engines check for updates or fetch previews on startup. That network call can add noticeable seconds on a cold start, especially on a VPN or a bad connection. If your engine has an “offline mode” or “disable update check” setting, turn it on. The skins themselves don’t need the network — only the update check does.
3. Test with a minimal config
If Codex feels slow and you suspect themes, do a clean experiment: rename your config to a backup, start Codex with just the default theme, and time it. Then add your favorites back one at a time, timing each. This isolates whether it’s themes at all — or whether it was something else in your config all along. Most of the time, it’s something else.
What NOT to worry about
- Dark vs light: zero performance difference. Gothic Void Expedition starts exactly as fast as any light skin.
- Complex gradients or images in a skin: only an issue if your engine re-renders them on every frame; for a static workspace, negligible.
- Switching themes frequently: switching costs a few milliseconds, not seconds. Keep your favorites installed.

Does uninstalling themes free up memory? Marginally — theme files are tiny. The bigger win is fewer things for the engine to scan at startup.
My engine scans my whole skins folder. Can I stop that? Check the engine’s settings; many let you point it at a specific folder or disable the library scan. If not, moving unused skins out of the watched folder works.
Is a lighter skin faster on low-end machines? No meaningful difference. Rendering text on a dark or light background is the same operation. The gains from the three tweaks above far outweigh any theme choice.
Startup lag from themes is almost always “too many installed + update checks”, never “the color is wrong”.
