Dream Skin, Codex Skin Manager and CLI tools can all run at once — if you separate their ports and config directories. Here is the setup that stops the conflicts before they start.
Run Multiple Codex Skin Engines Without Conflicts
Running more than one Codex skin engine at the same time is normal once you start customizing: one tool for visual preview, another for library management, a third for automation. The problem is that out of the box they collide — port clashes, config overwrites, and themes that behave differently depending on who read them last. Here is how to do it properly.
Why Run Multiple Engines?
Each engine is good at something the others are not:
- Dream Skin — visual preview and WYSIWYG editing of a theme.
- Codex Skin Manager — library management and one-click theme switching.
- CLI tools — automation, batch operations and scripting.
Using them together saves real time: preview visually, manage the library in a GUI, batch-apply with a script.
The Conflict Problem
When two engines run side by side without setup:
- Port conflicts — both try to bind
localhost:8080. - Config overwrites — each writes to the same config file and the last writer wins.
- Interpretation drift — the same theme file renders differently per engine.
- Resource contention — memory and CPU usage roughly double.
Solution 1: Give Each Engine Its Own Port

# CLI server (if it runs one)

Solution 2: Separate Config Directories
Never let engines share a config file:
DS_CONFIG_DIR=~/.config/dream-skin

CLI_CONFIG_DIR=~/.config/codex-cli
Solution 3: Stagger Startup
Launching everything at once is what triggers most port races. Start sequentially instead:
- Launch Dream Skin (it takes roughly 10 seconds to initialise).
- Wait for it to finish starting.
- Launch Codex Skin Manager.
- Wait about five seconds.
- Launch the CLI tools.
Solution 4: Use Containers
The cleanest separation is one engine per container:

Recommended Setup
For most people:
- Dream Skin for visual editing — port 8081.
- Codex Skin Manager for library management — port 8082.
- CLI for automation — no server required.
The one rule that matters: never run two web-based engines on the same port.
